Really cool to see all the sea life and then get some blue water diving in. I would freak out doing this so thank you for giving me the opportunity to see this amazing world vicariously through your amazing photos! Excellent place to see manta, sleeping sharks, lobster, eels, and more! Diving was very good and many many many white tip reef sharks here.
A reef just offshore, known as La Posa, had long been a source of fish and the community had occasionally taken divers there. I won’t dive. Nature & Wildlife Areas, Geologic Formations. These islands are really special. With a small, pristine beach, a thriving reef, warm winds and seas, and the namesake Split Rock, it’s a prefect place for adventure sports like hiking, rappelling and diving, or more relaxing activities like eating fresh seafood in the quiet cove.
Those are wonderful places and very much important to animals that are passing by, chilling, on leave, and having a grand family reunion. Please keep this in mind. When we arrived, we asked if we could camp on the beach and a palapa owner assured us that we could, just along the edge of his restaurant. This island is only accessible via a Mexico liveaboard, and because this island is mostly uninhabited, this is the perfect way to get away from the busy cities and get a good quality experience with some of the best the oceans have to offer. Traditionally a fishing village, for generations, people here have participated in three annual fishing seasons: the Cuaresma (a February fish run from South to North), the Pampanillo, (a North to South run in September/November), and the Rasqueteo, a community-wide effort to haul ashore a dragnet to comb the bay for sea life. Have you thought of writing a children’s picture book? Sadly, someone came along one day and speared all the large grouper, leaving the reef and the community of Roca Partida that much poorer. I so wish I could be there. It is open water dives and the unsteady conditions, with currents coming and going and large waves coming and going, many pelagic species are attracted to this area. What an amazing experience you are having. This archipelago of islands is part of a protected biosphere reserve and many conservation organizations are working around here to preserve the unique wildlife which inhabits and pass here.
That site is also full of big pelagic fish like tuna, wahoo.
A challenging dive site for someone with 50 dives, but the dive masters were keeping a good eye on me.
