Since reading multiple tomes on Russian history (including those of Montefiore and Smith, two narrators of "The Last Czars,") I've always dreamed of adapting the stories to film and television. Having read about Russian history a bit recently, I was excited to start the series.
The second big mistakes - the actors. Which also is bothering is that all of the actors speak british english which somehow doesn't reflect the mentality of russians. It was a ton of build up and then a swift jump to the house of special purpose.

The rest is entertaining and well acted in my opinion.
A sterile, Disney movie could have been produced I suppose, but the university scholars and authors make this series credible and closer to the historical record. The last Russian dynasty is a very sad story as Nicholas and Alexandria were very charismatic people, which is not being shown here.
This adds interest. Just when you begin getting engrossed in the story, in pop the experts who were interviewed for the series. Did Rasputin really have a London east end cockney accent?
The actors and their dialogue/scenes alone should be able to tell the story.
What's staying with me at the moment is something one of the aforementioned experts said (paraphrased) in the first episode: 'The czar was expected to be all things, and no one alive was reasonably qualified for that job, nor could be expected to meet every impossibly lofty expectation laid before the czar.' Don't get me wrong, this series has potential.
It's a tragic story, forever elevated to romantic status in the telling of the history of it.
As a history teacher myself, I believe history should be told like a story. Many other movies and stories it is; here it is not.

Poor direction here. There are certainly good things about it, but they are greatly outnumbered by negatives. Celebs. But the Romanovs deserves more than a too subjective history lesson, putting at the wall people out of their historical context. Amen.
| It's like the last two episodes they got bored and gave up. , not impressive performances but a nice result, except, maybe, the too easy use of sexuality, for realism and for catch the public too large.

I admit, after its end, many frustrations are too fresh in my case.
I would guess if you're also watching this you likely have some interest and knowledge of the history and story of the Romanov dynasty and perhaps more so the story of Nicholas, alix and Rasputin. I am a fan of history and when watching historical series or films I tend to google while watching because a lot of questions pop up in my head. Rasputin's influence grows.
