Edward St. Aubyn’s five Patrick Melrose novels — published beginning in 1992 and collected, to lavish praise, in 2012 — owe their popularity to the way they cross genres to satisfy two distinct cravings. They are delightful as pictured so far, but I have not yet read the final book in the series so I don't know how they turn out. philosophic discussion that lead . The series premiered on Showtime on 12 May 2018 to favourable reviews. The fifth has since been published, but at of this writing the five books are not available for sale as one unit in the United States. Pages and pages of (I guess?) Were they really capable, at age 2, of intelligently discussing philosophical ideas, doing incisive imitations of adults in the family's circle, etc.? This book/these novels are tremendously thought-provoking and I am desperate to discuss “what does it all mean” with other readers and yet there are what almost seem to be cautions to readers from “Patrick Melrose”/the author against reading too much between the lines and then “do nothing….do nothing….” So I will resist the very strong urge to “discuss” and simply say that there seems to me to be so much reading between the lines, such complexity and so much of importance in these novels that they are thoroughly worth persisting through to the end. Reviewed in the United States on May 29, 2020. Patrick’s father began raping and beating him when the boy was young. Patrick kicks the drugs, then (as though it's not a drug) the alcohol, and he loves his two sons, and after a fashion even loves his hateful mother who looked away, or was too blind to see, when Patrick's father raped him, then wasted his inheritance on a scoundrel. Much could be said but I will just say this: it is hard to imagine what the author’s process was for creating these works; they are, after all, autobiographical by all accounts, and it just seems monumental to have been able to be both inside his head and yet able to get outside it to create this tangible “product” that encompasses so much, an amazing experience of the interior worlds of several characters and the exterior worlds that Patrick Melrose and other characters inhabit.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. As we again leap forward in time, Patrick survives, becomes a lawyer, marries, and has two sons. Most 2 year-olds can't string together more than 5 or 6 words to make a sentence, and I'm being generous with that amount. I'd give it four and a half stars if there was that option because this collection of stories is almost perfect. I am not accusing St Aubyn of being a bastard; I mean that he writes very well about bastards, and that both their contempt for the world and St Aubyn’s contempt for them find their best expression in a certain kind of intelligent, frozen stylishness. Each of the five Patrick Melrose novels, by Edward St. Aubyn, has the weight of a prose poem, the span of a novella, and the structure of a vignette.

In 'Patrick Melrose,' Showtime's new miniseries based on the novels by Edward St. Aubyn, Benedict Cumberbatch plays a man unlike the suave, put-together gentlemen you're used to seeing. Born into a Cornish aristocratic family that goes back to William the Conqueror's time, Edward St. Aubyn grew up in gorgeous surroundings (thanks to the money of his mother's Cincinnati family) but in genuine terror, raped repeatedly from the ages of five to eight by his sadistic father. With that being said, here is my caveat emptor to the prospective reader: I didn't finish these novels on the first try. Read all five books. Their theme is darkly disconcerting and some may find them too troubling, but I would say that the depth of insight, the depiction of a particular contemporary and most problematic social milieu and the torment of its author/narrator, as well as its surprising, brilliantly caustic humor all contribute to its being a top-flight piece of literature, Reviewed in the United States on July 30, 2017. Patrick, in his early twenties, flies from London—where he is carrying on an imitation of life as an independently wealthy smack head—to New York City, where his father has died. I found myself simultaneously hurrying through the book so that I could put it down for the night and slowing to savor the polished sentences. I just downloaded it and can't wait to find that out and see how Patrick copes with life from where we left him and the family at the end of Mother's Milk. This was one of the most depressing books I have ever read. A boy is not only raped by is father but neglected by an alcoholic mother. The novels depict Melrose's descent into drug abuse with a clarity and honesty that startles and horrifies. Reviewed in the United States on April 23, 2019. .
