It is time to make translation a center piece of psychology, to celebrate it, and to communicate it. What is missing, I think, is an organized effort to celebrate psychology’s success at translation – to recognize translational psychology as an important, valued, and proper sub-discipline of psychology.
It is not always obvious to the lay public, to federal funding agencies, to legislative leaders, or even to ourselves that psychology is translational science. Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, 80, 804-813. These authors focused specifically on the conceptual and methodological challenges of translating social psychology to improve psychotherapy. Here is a historical factoid I recently heard: Few if any of the formal wars in the 20th century were fought between nations whose citizens spoke the same language. Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, 55, 23-27. Peterson, C., Seligman, M. E. P., & Vaillant, G. E. (1988).
The blog is based on one key principle: Now more than ever, people need help separating the good scientific information from the bad. Log in. Rather than being threatened by the new emphasis at NIH, psychology should be flattered.
Every psychology journal can do it, because translation is everywhere in psychology. Rather than seeing this new priority as somehow representing a threat to psychology, we need to recognize that psychology is the model of translation.
Every journal of psychology featuring at least one article, perhaps a regular section, on translational research. I wrote that Monitor piece because of growing concern in the basic research community of psychology about the emerging priority of translational research at NIH. Doctors who treat actual patients have all sorts of insights that can and should inform basic research. COVID-19 resources for psychologists, health-care workers and the public. In medicine today, science and practice have become coequal. And beyond health-related matters, psychology enjoys fantastic translation in areas such as human factors, education, organizational behavior, decision-making, environmental design, and social influence. Finally, because the good life unfolds over time, positive psychologists have undertaken ambitious longitudinal studies. Think about it. As researchers, we should talk to these people and take seriously what they say. It may or may not be recognized as translational research, but that’s what it is. Thank you, this is so long overdue!
Long a mainstay in medicine, where it has been described as a bench to bedside approach, translational research is an increasingly strong emphasis of modern medicine. Psychological researchers often use proxy measures (with proxy research participants), and it is little wonder that the application of research results often leads the skeptic to ask "Is that all there is?". Expressions of positive emotion in women's college yearbook pictures and their relationship to personality and life outcomes across adulthood. For every great example of basic research that speaks to the real world - like Milgram's laboratory studies of obedience or Zimbardo's prison study - there are many more examples that travel poorly out of the journals where they are published. We could start, for example, by dedicating sections of our journals to translational research.
Indeed, some of the modern classics of positive psychology, like Harker and Keltner's (2001) yearbook study, Danner, Snowdon, and Friesen's (2001) nun study, and Peterson, Seligman, and Vaillant's (1988) study of optimism and health, spanned many decades. Psychology is a model discipline for translational research in health-related areas and beyond.
We must go beyond the collection of reports and stories from successful people - otherwise the research is simply about attributions - but their ideas are critically important to understanding the good life and planning systematic research. In my earlier Monitor column, I asserted that translation is woven into the fabric of our discipline, and that we excel at it. Collections of such articles can be assembled into special volumes, to further promote the translational science of psychology.
Here is my thesis: Positive psychology, at least when done well, can teach the rest of psychology how to do translational research.
Danner, D.D., Snowdon, D.A., & Friesen, W.V. Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, 80, 112-124. I’m sure others can be developed. A great example is the December 2006 American Psychologist article by Tashiro and Mortensen. Translational research is a bidirectional process that involves multidisciplinary integration among basic, clinical, practice, population, and policy-based research.
Whether or not this is accurate I do not know, but appreciate the larger and more metaphorical point. A loving relationship can be an oasis in uncertain times, but nurturing it requires attention, honesty, openness, vulnerability, and gratitude. Thanks for letting us know that this page . Collections of such articles can be assembled into special volumes, to further promote the translational science of psychology. We judge how intelligent people are by talking to them, heeding their counsel, and taking stock of the consequences. Third, positive psychology research studies outcomes that matter, not just in theories but in the actual lives of people: health and longevity, success and achievement, happiness and well-being.
Translational research is the application of basic science to practical problems. (2001). Writing in the June, 2006 issue of the Monitor on Psychology, I suggested that psychology is translational science.
The content of this field is kept private and will not be shown publicly. There is of course an important role to be played by laboratory experiments, but positive psychology research cannot limit itself to snapshots, no matter how high their resolution. You can click on the topics above to see blog posts on specific subjects. Every journal of psychology featuring at least one article, perhaps a regular section, on translational research. Every psychology journal can do it, because translation is everywhere in psychology. Commenting in the February issue of the APS Observer, Peter Vernig also called our attention to the tradition and value of translational research in psychology.
Translational research is the application of basic science to practical problems.
Amen! Harker, L.A., & Keltner, D. (2001). Translational research is broader than the traditional term “applied research.” Applied research is any research that may possibly be useful for enhancing health or well-being.
The goal of translational research is to speed up scientific discovery into patient and community benefit. Advancing psychology to benefit society and improve lives, © 2020 American Psychological Association. What Is Metacognition?
Appreciate that research participants are called "subjects" because they are "subject to" whatever the psychologist does to them in the laboratory. Translational research is elevated from a side-benefit of an individual study to an organized and coherent effort in its own right. It is easy to find instances of basic research in psychology that has been translated into successful application and intervention. If we want to generalize to such groups of people, it is best to study them and not surrogates or analogues, as is so often done in business-as-usual research. Positive emotions in early life and longevity: Findings from the nun study. British Psychological Society Research Digest. Consider a finding from the person perception genre showing that a person (actually a picture of a person) is seen as more intelligent if he or she is wearing glasses. Well, sure. We are all about assessing the scientific evidence on human problems and looking at how to use it every day. Does Your Partner Make You Feel Like a Loser? Perhaps one day we’ll see entire journals of translational psychology. In sum, when positive psychologists study the people to whom they wish to generalize, measure things that matter, and do so over time, the result is much better science that reduces translation problems.
It does not necessarily have to have any effort connected with it to take the research to a practical level. The basic research of psychology has long played a central role in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. Pessimistic explanatory style is a risk factor for physical illness: A thirty-five year longitudinal study. This is just one approach. We can address this by recognizing translational psychology in more formal ways. But in real life, with all of its depth and breadth, it is thoroughly implausible that "wearing glasses" carries the burden in our judgments of how smart people might be. Exceptions of course exist, including in particular action research championed decades ago by Kurt Lewin (1946). Help us improve your experience by providing feedback on this page. But the good life is not imposed on anyone, and it is best studied by identifying people who have created good lives for themselves and others: teachers, business leaders, philanthropists, caretakers, and so on. How Does It Help Us Think? Christopher Peterson was professor of psychology at the University of Michigan. If that's all we know about someone, we will rely on a syllogistic stereotype: he wears glasses ... he needs them to read ... he must be smart if he reads enough to need glasses. Get the help you need from a therapist near you–a FREE service from Psychology Today. When groups - like basic scientists and applied practitioners - speak the same language, the good life is encouraged.
Vernig was extolling the virtue of translational research in psychology, focusing especially on the value for students in clinical psychology to be involved in translational studies. Within medicine today, it is now agreed that translational research is more than a one-way street; bench to bedside is important, but so too is bedside to bench. The point is to achieve greater visibility and coherence for translational psychology. Translational research has a long history in our clinical and industrial-organizational psychology programs, which have a tradition of pursuing fundamental theoretical questions in the context of real-world applications such as personnel selection, teamwork, and effective approaches to treatment. I would like to suggest that the discipline of psychology embrace translational research in a far more ambitious way. Our discipline has always incorporated a flow of scientific discovery from bench to bedside. Second, positive psychology research does not rely as much as does business-as-usual psychology research on "subject pools" - collections of callow youth enrolled in psychology courses who are coerced into participating in studies under threat of academic penalty. The former is sometimes called T1 research, and the latter is dubbed T2 research. That said, a lot of psychological research translates poorly, despite the protests of the psychologists who do the studies. Well, the times they are a'changing, and psychology is now taking translational research very seriously, in part because federal research grants now demand that studies have a demonstrable practical payoff and in part - I hope - because it is the right and smart thing to do. Lewin, K. (1946).
